COUGAR, Wash. (AP) — A Skamania County, Wash., sheriff’s officer says Cowlitz County search and rescue volunteers helped Skamania County authorities rescue two chilled brothers at Ape Cave near Mount St. Helens.

Chief Deputy Pat Bond says other hikers saw the men Monday outside the upper exit of the cave in about 4 feet of snow. Those folks called 911 and took the brothers back inside the cave to wait for help.

Bond says the brothers went hiking in the snow but didn’t appear very well-prepared.

He says a Skamania County deputy responded along with members of the Volcano Rescue Team and Search and Rescue.

Bond says one man was in the early stages of hypothermia.

Ape Cave is about three miles northeast of the town of Cougar.
