SEATTLE (AP) — A Burlington Northern Santa Fe railway spokesman says the latest mudslides to hit Western Washington rail tracks mean a moratorium on passenger train travel between Seattle and Everett has been extended until 5 a.m. Friday.

Spokesman Gus Melonas (mel-OWN’-us) said Tuesday that more than 35 blocking slides have hit rail tracks in the area in the past two days — 95 percent of them between Seattle and Everett.

No injuries are reported.

Melonas says a passenger train moratorium in the Vancouver, Wash., area could be lifted as early as 3 p.m. Wednesday.

He says freight trains are running.

Heavy rainfall has weakened steep slopes above the tracks.
