LONDON (AP) — Real Madrid reached the Champions League quarterfinals for the first time in seven years by sweeping aside Lyon on Wednesday, and Chelsea relied on its first-leg goals to oust FC Copenhagen.
Karim Benzema scored against his former club to help Madrid beat Lyon 3-0 and send Jose Mourinho’s squad through 4-1 on aggregate.
Not only does the victory end Real’s miserable record, but it keeps Mourinho on course to win the competition with a third different club, having led Inter Milan to the title last season and FC Porto in 2004.
While Real is a nine-time European champion, Chelsea has yet to conquer the continent.
Having won the away leg at Copenhagen 2-0, Chelsea was frustrated at Stamford Bridge by the Danish club and was held to a 0-0 draw.
