BURNS, Ore. (AP) — A Harney County, Ore., official says a former wrangler at the federal Bureau of Land Management’s wild horse corrals near Burns is accused of failing to properly care for more than 20 Kiger mustangs he owned. One horse died.

Deputy District Attorney Stephen Ellis said Tim Westfall was charged Thursday with 22 counts of second-degree animal neglect and a single count of first-degree animal neglect.

Ellis says the horses “appeared very malnourished.”

The mustangs were Westfall’s own, not BLM horses.

A BLM spokeswoman tells The Oregonian that Westfall began working at the wild horse corrals last August but isn’t currently employed there.
