PORT ORCHARD, Wash. (AP) — A ballistics report has determined that a man suspected of kidnapping a 13-year-old Utah girl killed her during a shootout with deputies outside a Washington state Walmart store before putting a bullet through his own heart.

Kitsap County Prosecutor Russ Hauge (HOW’-ghee) says this week he received the Washington State Patrol’s report on the Jan. 23 shootings in Port Orchard. The findings were first reported by the Salt Lake Tribune.

Hauge says the report makes clear that after 31-year-old Anthony Allen Martinez shot and wounded two deputies, a third deputy shot him just above the knee. When 13-year-old Astrid Valdivia ran to Martinez to check on him, he put two bullets in her chest and then used the same gun to shoot himself in the heart.
