LA GRANDE, Ore. (AP) — The Wallowa County sheriff’s office has relocated more than 120 Lusitano horses from a remote northeast Oregon ranch to the Wallowa Valley.

The La Grande Observer reports the horses were seized as evidence in an animal neglect case Feb. 23.

Sheriff Fred Steen says the horses on the Carpe Diem Farm are still thin, and says the farm was being monitored because of suspicions of neglect.

Steen says the county will look into ways to recoup the cost of caring for the horses.

When authorities came across the farm, it was under nearly four feet of snow.

Farm owner Byrde Hill lives in Seattle, and the horses were under the care of employees.
