Battle Ground — Chief Umtuch Middle School is the proud new owner of a mobile created by Terry Furchgott of Seattle. The “Wings Around the World” mobile was dedicated during a ceremony at the school’s open house. The artwork, based on the fifth- through eighth-grade Social Studies curriculum, represents cultures from around the world, including Egypt, Assyria, Japan, Aztec, Mediaeval knight, Native American and pioneers.

The acquisition of the mobile was in compliance with the Washington State Arts Commission Art in Public Places program. The legislation requires state-owned new construction projects to set aside one-half of 1 percent of the construction budget for the acquisition of artwork. A local committee selected Furchgott after interviewing several artists. The mobile is hanging from the ceiling in one of the school’s hallway.
