PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — The latest federal study on air pollution finds that vehicle exhaust, wood smoke and solvents are top air pollution risks for Oregon.
A U.S. Environmental Protection Agency study of 2005 emissions in Oregon and nationwide finds that Oregon ranks high in those risk as well as overall toxic air pollution. EPA officials, however, caution that differences in how states track and report pollution levels make rankings suspect.
The Oregonian newspaper says the overall risk reported by EPA is relatively small. Nationally, the agency estimates that 50 people in a million exposed to the average level of 2005 pollutants for 70 years would contract cancer.
