NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — The Confederate submarine H.L. Hunley will be moving this summer in South Carolina.
The Post and Courier of Charleston reports Monday that officials at a lab plan to turn the submarine upright for the first time.
The first submarine to sink an enemy warship was pulled from the Atlantic Ocean in 2000 and officials have been working to preserve it. The sub has been in a cradle on its side since it was recovered.
The Hunley sank the blockading ship USS Housatonic in 1864, but the sub went down minutes later, killing its eight-member crew. Officials don’t know why the sub went down and say turning the submarine upright should reveal any hull damage.
