INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — IndyCar veteran Tomas Scheckter has been hired by KV Racing Technology-SH Racing to drive the No. 07 car in this year’s Indianapolis 500.

Team co-owner Jimmy Vasser hinted at the announcement last week when he acknowledged an announcement was coming soon.

The South African driver made his first Indy start in 2002 and was named the race’s rookie of the year after leading 85 laps. His day ended with a crash on lap 173.

Scheckter has now started nine times at Indy, with a best finish of fourth in 2003. He also led in three different Indy 500s, covering 153 laps.

He will be the fourth driver to start in the May 29 race, joining full-time drivers Tony Kanaan, Takuma Sato and E.J. Viso.
