CAMAS, Wash. (AP) — The Coast Guard says contractors are starting work Friday on a barrier to contain pollution at a grounded barge while it is dismantled on the Columbia River near Camas.

The Columbian reports it will take about 12 days to install the 850-foot coffer dam around the Davy Crockett.

The 431-foot converted Liberty ship from World War II went aground Jan. 20 and has already leaked some lubricating oil, fuel oil and diesel into the river.

More than 60 responders from agencies that include the Washington Department of Ecology and the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality recovered about 1,500 gallons of oil. An unknown amount may remain on board.

The Coast Guard has requested $3.5 million from the Oil Spill Liability Trust Fund for the cleanup work.
