STEVENS PASS, Wash. (AP) — The Washington Transportation Department hopes to reopen Highway 2 across Stevens Pass by Friday evening — if there are no more snow avalanches and mudslides.

The highway has been closed since about 5 a.m. Thursday when an avalanche covered all lanes at the pass under about 15 feet of snow.

Spokesman Jeff Adamson says crews using artillery and explosives brought down more snow at four other avalanche chutes, and crews have been busy moving it off the highway.

In addition, crews have been clearing a 6-foot deep mudslide that covered the highway at Tumwater Canyon near Leavenworth.

Crews have been using about 24 pieces of equipment to clear the highway.
