PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — The Portland Police Bureau says officers staged a dramatic rescue of a woman who was detained in a house, assaulted and brutally raped.

It happened after investigators received a tip late Saturday afternoon saying the woman was being held against her will in the bedroom of home on North Midway Avenue. The woman was believed to need serious medical attention.

Police Lt. Robert King says investigators quickly confirmed the location, staged an ambulance nearby and developed a tactical plan for approaching the residence. They entered the house, arrested a man and found the woman in a back bedroom. She was treated and taken to a hospital; the extent of her injuries was not immediately known.

The arrested man was identified as 29-year-old Kip Kawamoto. He’s been charged with first-degree rape, sodomy and kidnapping and second-degree assault.
