Skyridge students to perform ‘Guys and Dolls’

Skyridge Middle School students will perform the play, ‘Guys and Dolls’ from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday at Camas High School, 26900 S.E. 15th St.

Tickets can be purchased at the door and cost $7 for adults, and $5 for students and seniors.

Kindergarten orientation events set in Camas schools

The Camas School District has set kindergarten registration for the 2011-12 school year.

The purpose of orientation is to meet teachers and staff, and learn about the kindergarten curriculum. The district registrar, Shanna Nielson, will be on site at each event to register every child.

Those who are unable to attend kindergarten orientation can contact Nielson at 833-5410 to schedule a registration appointment.

In addition to registration forms, the following paperwork is required: A state-issued birth certificate, immunization information, and proof of residency, such as a driver’s license, utility bill, purchase agreement or renter’s agreement for the parent.

The dates are as follows: 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday at Grass Valley Elementary, 3000 N.W. Grass Valley Drive; 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 11 at Helen Baller Elementary, 1954 N.E. Local student makes dean’s list

Rachel Stenberg of Camas has made the Seattle Pacific University 2011 winter quarter dean’s list. Students on the dean’s list have completed at least 12 credits and attained a 3.5 or higher GPA.

Conference to focus on youth safety concerns

The Safe Communities Task Force will hold its third annual parent conference Saturday, May 21, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Boys & Girls Club’s O.K. Clubhouse, 4040 Plomondon St., Vancouver.

Titled “What Kids Know and Parents Wish They Did,” the conference includes workshops on today’s most critical youth safety issues.

“Nothing is more important than the safety of our community’s children,” said Kellie Henderson, a juvenile probation counselor and co-founder of the Safe Communities Task Force.

The conference will include presenters from local law enforcement, schools and youth agencies. Workshop topics include drugs and alcohol, gang identifiers and sexual exploitation of children.

Parents will be able to attend up to four workshops which will be repeated throughout the day.

Results from the latest Washington State Healthy Youth Survey indicate that 58 percent of Clark County 10th graders have used alcohol, 32 percent have used marijuana, and 6.5 percent have been involved with gangs.
