Halliburton argues against Ore. soldiers lawsuit

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Oil giant Halliburton has gone to federal court in Oregon to argue the court doesn’t have jurisdiction to hear a lawsuit filed by former Oregon Army National Guard soldiers over exposure to a toxic chemical in Iraq.

The Oregonian reports that U.S. Magistrate Judge Paul Papak has already twice denied similar motions by former Halliburton subsidiary Kellogg, Brown and Root — known as KBR — to dismiss the case.

Hundreds of U.S. and British troops were exposed to hexavalent chromium at a water treatment plant in Iraq while they were guarding KBR workers restoring oil flows.

Exposure to even tiny amounts of hexavalent chromium carries a high cancer risk. National Guard soldiers have sued in several states, citing deaths and health problems.

Papak says he’ll consider the latest motion.
