Hanford group questions nuclear waste storage

RICHLAND, Wash. (AP) — A Hanford group is asking the Energy Department questions about the cost of storing high-level radioactive waste in the absence of a federal repository.

Tri-City Herald reports the Energy Communities Alliance sent a letter to Energy Secretary Steven Chu on Tuesday expressing concern that storage costs will come out of clean-up funds.

A structure on the Hanford nuclear reservation to hold waste that is turned into glass at a new vitrification plant would cost about $240 million.

After spending $10 billion, the federal government backed away from using a waste repository at Yucca Mountain, Nev.
