EVERETT, Wash. (AP) — As a boy, Tom Eckenberg was thrilled to see hydroplanes racing on Lake Washington in Seattle.

Fifty years later the Everett man is still passionate about the sport as an owner.

His Miss Everett competes in the Grand Prix class — one size below the unlimiteds.

The Daily Herald reports the first race on the Grand Prix West circuit was last weekend in Moses Lake and the Miss Everett came in second in the final heat. Eleven other boats compete in 10 races from May to October in Washington, Oregon, Idaho and California.

Eckenberg says it’s an expensive hobby but still a thrill.
