ABERDEEN, Wash. (AP) — The National Weather Service is giving reporters a look Tuesday at the new Doppler radar station under construction on the Washington coast in Grays Harbor County near Copalis Beach.

The Daily World of Aberdeen reported it could be operating by September, giving forecasters a better look at incoming Pacific storms next winter.

The only other Doppler radar station in Western Washington is on Camano Island and the Olympics block its view of the ocean. Forecasters say they need a better picture of incoming storms to predict potentially damaging winds and rains.

Sen. Maria Cantwell helped secure funding for the new coastal radar station.

A Doppler radar station also is located in Spokane.
