CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — Polish skipper Zbigniew (zbeeg’ nyef ) Gutkowski has overcome boat problems and injury to finish the fourth leg of the Velux 5 Oceans yacht race in South Carolina.

Race officials say his Operon Racing yacht crossed the finish line off Charleston early Thursday. He’s the fourth and last competitor to finish the fourth segment of the solo around-the-world race.

It took Gutkowski 38 days to sail from Punta del Este in Uruguay after he had to put in to port in Brazil to make repairs on his 60-foot yacht. He was also mending broken ribs he suffered in a fall on his yacht shortly after leaving Uruguay.

The fifth and final leg of the race leaves next week for France where the Velux 5 Oceans began last year.
