VANCOUVER — A free public event at 11 a.m. Monday will mark the start of construction on an indoor rock-climbing gym on the corner of 12th and Main streets in downtown Vancouver.

The $1.5 million project, The Source Climbing Center, is being developed by Portland-based Hurley Development. Its owner-operators are Portland rock-climbing enthusiasts Hanz Kroesen, an experienced climbing instructor and climbing-wall designer, and Michael Lary, an experienced climber and instructor.

The indoor venue will include 36-foot walls and a dedicated “bouldering” area with 14-foot walls for advanced climbers. Developers expect to open the facility this fall, offering memberships as well as creative clinics and programs designed for colleges and youth organizations.

Portland-based Skanska USA Building is the project’s general contractor, and Vancouver-based LSW Architects oversaw the design.
