Letter: Privatization will not save Medicare

The Columbian
Published: May 7, 2011, 12:00am

In reference to Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler’s defense of her support to privatize Medicare, I do not understand how the Camas Republican can conclude that allowing insurance companies to take 10 percent to 20 percent off the top of Medicare will save the program. Republicans do not want to accept that our financial problems are not just spending problems, but also revenue problems. We went from a federal budget surplus at the end of President Clinton’s administration to an impressive deficit after President George W. Bush’s massive tax cuts.
