CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) — First lady Michelle Obama is praising the work of the U.S. military specialists who killed Osama bin Laden as “the very essence of the word service.”
Mrs. Obama gave the commencement address Saturday at University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, focusing on public service.
She notes the dangers faced by the Navy SEALS who brought down the terrorist leader Sunday and says they had families back in the U.S. who didn’t know where they were or whether they’d return. She says that’s the essence of service.
It is the first lady’s first visit to Iowa since the 2008 election, and her first major public comments since bin Laden’s death.
Mrs. Obama campaigned in Iowa regularly for her husband before he won the state’s Democratic presidential caucuses three years ago.
