COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — All Brad Van Liew has to do is finish the final leg of the Velux 5 Oceans race intact to claim the title. He admits he might not resist the chance to complete a first-place sweep of the yacht race’s five round-the-world segments.
Van Liew shoves off Saturday from Charleston for the last and shortest stretch of racing, concluding in about two weeks at La Rochelle, France — where the event began nearly seven months ago.
The American has docked first in the previous four legs, the last which went from Uruguay to Charleston. Van Liew says the racer in him could push for a victory in this leg even though he’s built enough points to remain in front no matter when he completes the journey.
