HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — After decades of hunting, the FBI is down to one last fugitive wanted for the record-setting 1983 robbery of a Connecticut armored car depot.
Victor Gerena was allegedly recruited by a militant Puerto Rican independence group as the inside man for a $7 million heist, the biggest cash robbery in U.S. history at the time. He has been on the FBI’s 10 most wanted list longer than any other fugitive.
On Tuesday the FBI in Puerto Rico arrested the last of 16 alleged accomplices, Norberto Gonzalez Claudio.
The FBI believes Gerena is alive and living in Cuba, outside the reach of U.S. law enforcement. Despite rising hopes that Washington’s relations with Havana could improve analysts say there is no evidence of any serious negotiations addressing Gerena and other American fugitives in Cuba.
