Federal agency approves sea lion removal at dam

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — A federal agency has granted permission for Oregon and Washington to resume removing or killing California sea lions at Bonneville Dam.

The Oregonian reports the decision Friday by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration comes six months after a federal appeals court struck down a similar permit.

NOAA Fisheries officials say they believe the agency has fixed flaws the court pointed out in the original permit issued three years ago.

The sea lions eat salmon as they bunch up below Bonneville Dam on the Columbia River just east of Portland. But some of those salmon are listed as endangered or threatened.

The Humane Society of the United States had challenged the first permit in court.
