ARLINGTON, Wash. (AP) — Authorities say the pilot died when his small plane crashed and burned at Arlington Municipal Airport.

Kristin Banfield of the Arlington Police Department says the pilot was the only person aboard Saturday afternoon.

KIRO-TV quoted Brainard Lee, a pilot near the scene, as saying the plane took off but was too steep and too slow. He told the station the plane’s nose and wing hit the ground, and then it flipped and burst into flames.

Federal investigators headed to the airport to begin an investigation.
