CAIRO (AP) — An Egyptian security official says an angry mob attacked a group of mainly Christian protesters demanding drastic measures to heal religious tensions, and scores of people have been injured.

Hundreds of protesters have been holding a sit-in outside the state television building for nearly a week, blocking traffic.

The official says nearly 100 people lobbed rocks at the protesters and set vehicles on fire early Sunday outside the TV building, which sits on a street that lines the Nile River. The official says the mob was retaliating for an earlier scuffle that left one of them badly injured.

Police and army troops fired in the air to disperse the crowd. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media.
