FLORENCE, Ore. (AP) — An Oregon lighthouse is about to get a restoration that could keep it closed for up to two years.
The Heceta (heh-SEE-tuh) Head Lighthouse near Florence is 118 years old and remains a favorite of photographers.
But The Oregonian reports the 56-foot lighthouse is in poor repair. Among the problems are attempts to stop leaks over the years that have also sealed in moisture, causing damage.
The federal government will pay more than $1 million toward the project, and the state will put up about $217,000.
Work is to begin Aug. 1, and the entire area will be closed for about two months. By the end of September, the trails, parking lot and nearby oil house are expected to reopen, although the lighthouse itself will remain closed through the renovation.
