BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — A person familiar with negotiations has told The Associated Press that the Buffalo Sabres have signed a nonbinding letter of intent to purchase the Rochester Americans of the American Hockey League.
The Sabres are a few days into examining the Americans’ operation, though a formal sale would be considered months away, the person said Tuesday, speaking on the condition of anonymity because of a confidentiality agreement that is in place.
The sale would reunite the Sabres with the Americans, who served as Buffalo’s minor-league affiliate through the 2007-08 season. One potential obstacle to the sale would be Buffalo’s current affiliate agreement with Portland, which runs through the 2013-14 season and doesn’t include an out clause.
