DARRINGTON, Wash. (AP) — Rescuers are following a set of apparent snowshoe tracks in their search for an off-duty Washington State Patrol trooper missing in the North Cascades.

The Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office says its helicopter found the tracks Monday, and a team of about five rescue volunteers headed to the area west of Lyman Lake on Monday night to look for 46-year-old trooper Dan Anderson. The sheriff’s office has lost communication with the team, as is common in the mountains, but a spokeswoman says the rescuers were following the tracks Tuesday.

Anderson is a 21-year veteran of the State Patrol and works as a motorcycle trooper out of Marysville. He sent his coordinates as an emergency signal on Sunday. He had been snowshoeing with friends but was on his own when he signaled for help.

Anderson is described as an avid hiker who is well prepared with food, clothing and equipment.
