Seattle transit tunnel diggers wary of voids

SEATTLE (AP) — As Sound Transit begins digging a three-mile tunnel in Seattle for a light rail link between the University of Washington and downtown, it’s taking steps to prevent the same kind of voids that opened when it tunneled under the city’s Beacon Hill.

The agency paid more than $3 million to fill voids. It had to pay $476,000 to the owner of one house that had cracks in the foundation and holes in the yard.

The Seattle Daily Journal of Commerce reports operators of boring machines will take precautions against what’s known as “over excavating.”

In particular, the staff recognizes the risk of tunneling under the Montlake Cut, part of the Lake Washington Ship Canal, near the university.
