INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Indianapolis Speedway officials say Swiss driver Simona De Silvestro is on her way to the hospital after burning both hands during a crash at an Indy 500 practice.

The 22-year-old has second-degree burns to her right hand and superficial burns to her left hand, according to track officials.

De Silvestro lost control of her car Thursday afternoon and it slammed into a wall, went airborne and flipped several times before coming to a rest upside down and in flames. She was able to walk into a vehicle that took her to the track’s medical center. Smoke continued to billow from the severely damaged car as her crew turned it right side up so it could be towed off the track.

De Silvestro is in 11th place in the IndyCar standings, with a season-best fourth-place finish at St. Petersburg.
