A Vancouver man was charged Thursday with first-degree arson for allegedly setting a fire in a local hotel room.

Bruce Kangas, 41, made his first appearance in Clark County Superior Court, and Judge Barbara Johnson set his bail at $500,000.

Arraignment was set for June 2.

According to court documents, Kangas admitted setting a fire Tuesday in his room at the Motel 6, 221 N.E. Chkalov Drive. He told investigators that he allegedly started the fire because he wanted firefighters to respond and take him to the hospital.

The blaze was contained to the room and no one was apparently injured. It was not immediately clear how Kangas allegedly set the fire.

Prosecutors filed the first-degree arson charge, which entails a risk to human life, because nearby hotel rooms were occupied, according to court documents.

According to court paperwork, Kangas has bipolar disorder and is off his medication.
