SALEM, Ore. (AP) — The state Senate unanimously approved a bill that would give Oregonians an extra month of protection from having their wages garnished to collect a debt.
The measure, which was passed Thursday, would protect income from social security, veterans’ benefits, unemployment insurance and other benefits that cover basic living expenses. The bill aligns Oregon’s garnishment practices with recent new federal policy and helps clarify the process for banks implementing garnishment orders.
The bill now moves to the House.
