CASARES, Spain (AP) — Alvaro Quiros qualified in style for the knockout stages of the World Match Play Championship on Friday, chipping in for an eagle to clinch a 5-and-4 victory over Denmark’s Soren Kjeldsen.

The big-hitting Spanish player is best known for getting distance off the tee but showed deftness with his pitching by spinning his second shot at the par-4 14th back into the hole at the Finca Cortesin course in Andalusia.

It was the 26th-ranked Quiros’ second win in Group H, having upset No. 9 Paul Casey 3 and 1 on Thursday.

Two-time U.S. Open champion Retief Goosen, reigning British Open champion Louis Oosthuizen and 2009 PGA Championship winner Y.E. Yang were all eliminated from the tournament after their second straight defeats.
