PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Portland police say community involvement is the key to keeping the New Columbia neighborhood safe from gang shootings.

North Precinct Cmdr. Mike Leloff told a Wednesday evening community meeting that police are doing the best they can.

The Oregonian reports that residents at the meeting asked for more help following the Monday night fatal shooting of 18-year-old Shalamar Edmond as he was walking in the neighborhood. Police believe it’s the fifth gang-related shooting death this year in Portland.

Officials told the 100 residents meeting at the New Columbia Community Education Center that the city is committed to keeping the neighborhood safe.
