Unions, advocacy groups plan Oregon Capitol rally

SALEM, Ore. (AP) — Publicly funded workers are planning to rally at the state Capitol to demand fewer cuts to their jobs and the services they provide.

Unions and other advocacy groups are bringing busloads of demonstrators from around Oregon to the rally on Friday. Many will have the day off work because Friday is a mandatory furlough day for most state employees, one of 10 mandatory days off the state scheduled to save money in the current two-year budget period.

Organizers say they’ll push lawmakers to adopt the recommendations from a report issued by the Service Employees International Union. The report recommended alternatives to service cuts, including more aggressive tax collection and trimming management.
