EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Michigan State guard Russell Byrd has had another setback.

The school says Byrd will have surgery on his left foot Friday. He missed his freshman season with an injury to that same foot.

Michigan State expects the 6-foot-7 Byrd to be out for four months, giving him time to recover and potentially be ready to play at the start of the season.

The Spartans will need his ability to make 3-pointers because guards Kalin Lucas and Durrell Summers are out of eligibility and guard Korie Lucious was kicked off the team last season.

Byrd averaged more than 23 points and 10 rebounds during the 2009-10 season at Blackhawk Christian School in Fort Wayne, Ind.
