HONOLULU (AP) — A tourist from Washington state has been charged with murdering the woman he was staying with at a Big Island resort.

Hawaii County police on Wednesday charged 46-year-old Howard Philip Zimmerman, who is also known as Philip Howard Zimmerman, with second-degree murder, kidnapping, first-degree terroristic threatening and second-degree criminal property damage.

He is being held on $320,000 bail and is expected to appear in court Thursday.

Zimmerman and 44-year-old Susan Brockert, both of Bellevue, Wash., were registered together at the resort on the Kohala Coast.

Police say resort employees received calls from guests reporting screams coming from a room Monday.

Security and staff rushed to the room where a worker saw a woman being struck on the head with an object.

Brockert was pronounced dead at a hospital Tuesday.
