PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The Phillies activated reliever Jose Contreras from the 15-day disabled list before their game against the Cincinnati Reds.
Contreras had been out since April 25 with a grade one strain in his right elbow. He had been the closer before getting hurt, converting all five of his opportunities, but will now set up for Ryan Madson.
David Herndon was optioned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley to make room on the roster Thursday. The right-hander pitched 2 1-3 scoreless innings in Wednesday night’s 19-inning, 5-4 win over the Reds.
Cincinnati also made a roster moves Thursday, recalling right-hander Daryl Thompson from Double-A Carolina and placing Matt Maloney on the 15-day DL, retroactive to Tuesday, with a strained left oblique.
