GREENWATER, Wash. (AP) — A Pierce County, Wash., sheriff’s spokesman says the father of a 2-year-old boy swept away in the fast-moving Greenwater River was the one to find him.

The family was not immediately identified. Sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer said both parents work for area law enforcement agencies.

Troyer said the boy’s mother and a family friend were making lunch Friday at a campsite near the river, with the boy’s father due to arrive later. One minute, the child was sitting in a small chair, waiting for lunch. The next minute, he was gone. After a quick search, campers spotted the child floating away in the swift water. A search and rescue team responded, along with the boy’s father.

The News Tribune says the boy was taken to a fire station, then a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
