SALEM, Ore. (AP) — Oregon lawmakers have reinstated dozens of custodial jobs in the Capitol Mall area that had been targeted for elimination under Gov. John Kitzhaber’s proposed budget.

The Salem Statesman Journal reports that the budget called for eliminating 61 jobs and hiring contractors to do the cleaning work.

But a legislative budget panel earlier this week deleted only four positions that are now vacant. Lawmakers say that decision is likely to stick as the session draws to a close.

Lawmakers say the custodians argued they could do the work better.
