MILWAUKEE (AP) — San Francisco Giants catcher Buster Posey is out for the season after having surgery Sunday to repair torn ligaments in his ankle sustained in a collision at home plate on Wednesday night.

Head athletic trainer Dave Groeschner says Posey had two screws inserted into his lower leg to stabilize it and will needed a second operation in eight to 10 weeks to take them out.

The 2010 NL Rookie of the Year broke a bone in his lower left leg and injured the ankle in a collision with Florida’s Scott Cousins. There is no timetable for his return, but Groeschner believed Posey could be ready for the start of next season.

The collision has sparked a debate on if rules should be changed to better protect catchers at the plate.
