HILLSBORO, Ore. (AP) — An Oregon man accused of throwing buckets of water on his young son as the underwear-clad boy stood outside in near-freezing temperatures has been sentenced to nearly six years in prison.

The Oregonian says 50-year-old David Andrew Cecil of the Portland suburb of Hillsboro pleaded guilty Tuesday to three counts of first-degree criminal mistreatment in Washington County Circuit Court.

His 11-year-old son, Montgomery Johnston, was in court to ask his father why he did what he did last Nov. 22. Police said at the time that the two had argued over the boy’s grades.

Cecil told the court he had a diabetic issue that night. Responding to his son, Cecil blamed his actions on his high blood-sugar level and some medication. He apologized to the boy and told him he loved him.
