SALEM, Ore. (AP) — The Oregon Senate unanimously approved a measure that would ban the sale of shark fins used in traditional Chinese soup.
The measure approved Tuesday specifically prohibits “possessing, selling, offering for sale, trading or distributing” shark fins.
It makes an exception for spiny dogfish, a small shark that accounts for 300,000 pounds in landings by commercial fishermen each year. Sport fishermen with a valid license are not affected.
State fish and wildlife managers say about 150 sharks are caught each year off Oregon.
The bill also unanimously passed the House and now heads to the governor for signature or veto.
