TUALATIN, Ore. (AP) — A bear that wandered into a field next to an elementary school in the Portland area was tranquilized and removed after classes were canceled for what turned out to be a slow chase that lasted about five hours.

KGW-TV reports that Tualatin Elementary School was in lockout Wednesday morning while police and wildlife managers tried to keep the adult black bear cornered in the field.

The effort to catch the bear included plenty of onlookers who began sharing their accounts on Twitter through the morning.

An Oregon State Police wildlife trooper said the bear was shot with a tranquilizer dart before it climbed a tree and fell asleep.

Senior Trooper Roger Reid said the bear would be removed to the Oregon Coast Range and released.
