KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The idea of raising the value of athletic scholarships to the total cost of attending a school is not new. But it was recently raised by the Big Ten and Southeastern Conference, whose universities could absorb the increased costs much easier than most smaller athletic programs.
But a division of opinion could sour relationships within conferences such as the Big 12, which has schools with large budgets (Texas and Oklahoma), and others with smaller bank accounts (Iowa State and Kansas State).
As a subject of discussion at the Big 12’s spring meetings this week, it has drawn sharply divided outlooks. If a change is made, it would have to be done at the NCAA level.
