UW students propose raising taxes to head off cuts

SEATTLE (AP) — Some University of Washington student leaders say the way to prevent more spending cuts to higher education is to raise state taxes.

KOMO Radio reports they made three proposals Wednesday at a news conference in Seattle:

— eliminate the sales tax exemption some companies receive on equipment purchases,

— eliminate the business and occupation tax exemption some companies enjoy,

— hold local levies to support community and technical colleges.

The students say it’s a mistake to cut spending at the university because it generates new technology and jobs.
