Springfield man faces eviction for hanging US flag

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. (AP) — A senior housing complex in Springfield threatens to evict a 70-year-old veteran for hanging the American flag on an outside wall.

Edward Zivica (zih-VEE-kuh) has been clashing for more than a year with St. Vincent de Paul of Lane County, which manages the government-subsidized housing. Zivica hangs his flag for observances such as Veterans Day.

Management says that violates rules against hanging anything on exterior walls. The complex put up a flagpole, but Zivica calls its flag “flimsy and cheesy-looking.”

He’s been told he must promise by Nov. 15 not to hang his flag or he’ll be evicted.

Zivica has few other housing options but says it would be difficult for him not to fly his flag on Veterans Day.
