OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) — Washington Gov. Chris Gregoire is targeting state-issued cell phones and other administrative costs as a way to save money.

Gregoire called on state agencies Friday to review phone usage and subscription plans. Her office says many state employees believe there are savings to be found by reducing the number of devices.

Gregoire also wants officials to reduce the number of cars in the state fleet by another 300. Her directive also calls for more video or online conferencing to avoid travel expenses.

State leaders are looking for widespread cuts to cover a $1.4 billion budget shortfall. Lawmakers are scheduled to return after Thanksgiving to begin that task.
